Book Publishing Sales Decreasing; Opportunity Increasing?
Melissa Giovagnoli | October 10th, 2011 in : New Idea of the Month
I was just reading Seth Godin’s blog of the day. It is spot on about sales of books and the dramatic decline in sales we will see as a result of the huge increase in publishing on every platform imaginable. Seth called it “the dark secret of the book industry, and one of the new truths of the music business.” He adds, “Every year, total book sales have been relatively flat, growing just a bit.”
Then Seth points out, “Missing from this analysis: the number of books published each year is going up, and fast. And with ebooks taking off, the number of books published is about to go up by a factor of 100.” Seth so astutely points out that the public doesn’t care who publishes what and therefore the result is that the sales per author will have a sharp decline each year.
Finally Seth, in his usual salient fashion, states the following insight, “Good for people who like to discover interesting ideas. Bad for people who publish them the traditional way.” I’ll end this post with a favorite Steve Jobs’ phrase . . . “Think Different.” In other words there is room for those of us (yes, that means you too) who can and will choose to “Think Different.” The only question is how will you do it? Do you need help? If you do, go find it. Don’t stop until you do . . . “Think Different.” It will be worth it.
