I just met Derek Rauchenberger this weekend but I doubt that I will ever forget him and the story he told me. I bet you won’t forget him either . . . after you watch the video below and read the story he wrote. Please comment on it for CNN’s awareness of the kindness of some people, in this case, the kindness of a deer hero named Keith. Check it out.
Derek’s Story
I live an hour outside of Chicago where the winter has been mild but recently chilled. This has put a thin layer of ice over some of the area lakes including Crystal Lake where I came across a stranded deer about 100 yards offshore. Some of my neighbors had gathered and we learned that it had been there since early morning when it became encircled by a pack of foxes. A nearby woman was able to chase the foxes away from the deer, but the deer was unable to get its footing as it lay sprawled and injured across the ice.
Local fire department and animal welfare authorities had been called and said they would not be able to provide assistance. The predicted afternoon warm-up to 40 degrees would surely determine its fate without a rescue effort.
As locals gathered to witness the sad plight of the unfortunate deer, we discussed our options. We had a small boat, but the ice was too thick to boat and too thin to walk on. I called a local fly-fishing friend Keith (anonymous) who seemed to have been preparing for this moment his entire life. He showed up with a fully rubberized suit and 100′ of rope. We attatched the rope to the boat and he shoved off from shore and approached the deer. The closer he got to the deer, the more the deer began to wiggle across the slick ice as it tried to escape his grasp. Keith was basically able to scare it back to shore where it shook off the chills and returned to the wild. Keith (anonymous) is our local Deer Hero!
I am proud to submit this wonderful story of a deer man with rubber suit who was willing to “risk his life” to save an animal.

I was just reading Seth Godin’s blog of the day. It is spot on about sales of books and the dramatic decline in sales we will see as a result of the huge increase in publishing on every platform imaginable. Seth called it “the dark secret of the book industry, and one of the new truths of the music business.” He adds, “Every year, total book sales have been relatively flat, growing just a bit.”
Sometimes the answers to perplexing questions are so obvious, so abundantly apparent that they are completely overlooked. Such is the case of our euphemistically captioned “jobs-free” sluggish economic recovery.
Both business and mainstream media seem confounded by this reality, as corporate profits and executive compensation skyrocket to unprecedented levels. Inevitably the question is raised – but [...]
Want to think wayyyyy “out of the box?” Just ask a child. I just heard from a friend that Peter Senge uses the power of uber creativity by working with children. To help imagine the possibilities connecting with children more often can bring to creativity and innovation, take a look at this recent reply I [...]

I just read a great blog article on the Harvard Business Review Blog website on “The Business of Values.” I thought one of the most intriguing findings the author points out is the following:
“Paraphrasing President Lincoln, Nitin Nohria, the very thoughtful new dean of Harvard Business School said, “The real test of a person character is [...]
